“The surface of the planet is dominated by large oceans. Water covers around 85% of the surface, and seasonal melt-water causes flooding on the Northern continent during the spring and summer months, causing this figure to rise to 86%.”
Atmosphere: nitrogen/oxygen (can support human life)
Surface Area: 1.012 Earths
Surface Gravity: 1.022 g
Moons: Aegir has one large moon, exerting a significant tidal force upon the planet’s oceans.
At the outer edge of it’s system’s habitable zone, Aegir is a cold world, but is still capable of supporting complex life. With an axial tilt slightly larger than that of Earth, it has large polar regions and undergoes extreme seasonal changes. The polar regions are covered by sheet ice even during the summer, and this expands considerably through the winder months. Geological activity helps keep the oceans warm, accounting for the rich marine ecosystems.
The surface of the planet Aegir is dominated by large oceans. Water covers around 85% of the surface, and seasonal melt-water causes flooding on the Northern continent during the spring and summer months, causing this figure to rise to 86%.
Aegir has only one large continent, situated in the northern hemisphere. This continent has been named after one of Earth’s primordial super-continents, ‘Gondwana’, as it appears to be a conjunction of at least two smaller continents. Much of this landscape is close to sea-level and consists of tidal mud flats and lowland plains.
A smaller continent sits in the southern hemisphere, and is home several large volcanoes. It is thought that these volcanoes play a significant role in warming the planet’s atmosphere, making life possible. The tiny island continent simply named “Isla” sits in the shallow ocean between the two larger continents. This string of small volcanic islands represents the highest point of an underwater mountain range that stretches halfway around the globe.
Flora and Fauna
In terms of animal and plant life, Aegir is similar to a primordial Earth. The majority of life exists beneath the surface of the oceans, with only a few plant and animal species on land.
Aegir’s central ocean is teaming with life, ranging from thick kelp forests to crustaceans, and at least one intelligent species… the Eldir.
The Eldir are a race of bipedal aquatic aliens. They have an intelligence comparable to that of primitive humans, and their various cultures range in development from hunter-gathers to pre-industrial communities. Their elongated sculls are topped by a long fin-like gill that filters oxygen from the water.
For information on the Eldir, their physical traits and society, see their SciFi Ideas article “Alien Profile: The Eldir“.
