Here are the full competition details for the Alien August Competition 2014. After much deliberation, we’ve decided that the rules for the competition will be exactly the same as they were for last year’s competition. The only major difference is that we’ve secured a gallery of 100 alien illustrations for entrants to use (optional).
For the competition, we’re asking entrants to exercise that most powerful of muscles, the imagination, to create an entire new race of people. Use your powerful human brain organ to think up the most interesting and unusual alien species you can. Once you’ve got an idea, write an article describing your aliens and send it to us.
Entries should be no longer than 1000 words in length, and should provide details about the aliens’ biology/physiology, society/culture, and any other details that you feel are relevant and/or interesting (eg; information about their government, history, relations with other species, mating habits, technology, shoe size, etc.) using subheadings to separate information where necessary. Please also tell us your full name, where you live, and (of course) the name of your alien species for inclusion in the article’s header. The winning article will be the one that details the most interesting alien species, with points awarded for creativity, originality, and scientific plausibility. This being SciFi Ideas, the best IDEA wins (although factors such as how well written your article is may be factored into the final decision). When you’re done, email your entry and any other relevant information to email@example.com using the name of your species as the “subject” of the email. All competition entries that meet the requirements (as detailed here) will be published to the SciFi Ideas website. If you’d like to use this opportunity to promote yourself, your blog, or a published work of fiction, please send us a link along with your entry and we’ll gladly include it alongside your article. The competition closes Saturday August 30th.
Since we’re posting all the entries to the website, we’d like to find a suitable image to match each alien profile. We appreciate that not everybody is a skilled artist, and gaining permission from artists can be difficult, so we’ve already secured permission to use any or all of the 100 illustrations featured in this gallery by Alex Thümler. We recommend you thumb through the gallery to see if any of the illustrations is a suitable match for your alien species. Of course, if you want to provide your own artwork (perhaps you want to pick something from DeviantArt), you’re welcome to do so. If you can’t find an image that matches your creative vision (perhaps your aliens are just too damned weird), that’s fine too. We promise not to hold it against you.
The prize bundle for this year’s competition contains the coveted SciFi Ideas competition winner’s mug, plus the following books:
